Chrysler Building Joins Other Midtown Icons in Earning LEED-EB Gold

No longer is LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Gold certification only the province of the Empire State Building. Tishman Speyer has announced that the 77-story skyline stalwart Chrysler Building has added to its Energy Star labels from 2008 (85) and 2012 (84) by also earning a Gold rating under LEED-EB: OM. The application was primarily supported by recent upgrades to the 1.2 million-square-foot building’s energy efficiency and maintenance program, as well as new plumbing fixtures. Overall, the Chrysler Building has dropped energy consumption by 21 percent over the past year.

“We are acutely aware of our responsibility to be an exemplary environmental steward as we develop and operate properties all over the world,” said Tishman Speyer Co-CEOs Jerry Speyer and Rob Speyer in a press release. “Our commitment to sustainability is very strong and our investment partners care deeply as well. In addition, we find that more and more of our tenants are looking to work collaboratively with us to maximize the results of our efforts. The LEED and other equivalent designations tell us that we are succeeding in this very important area.”

In addition to the Chrysler Building’s certification, Tishman Speyer also announced that Lumière, the largest privately owned office building in Paris, France, received the HQE Exploitation Certification, the country’s highest property environmental award. Lumiere received the highest HQE ranking of any French office building in the largest size category, and Tishman Speyer now owns three of the top ten ranked buildings in France.

Lumière is located in the Eastern business district of Paris. Built in 1992, it offers seven floors above the two-story lobby atrium level. In 2011, Tishman Speyer completed the largest lease transaction ever completed in the city of Paris, signing the French Ministry of the Interior to a 400,000-square-foot lease at the building.

Tishman Speyer now has 49 properties across its portfolio nationally with a LEED designation, including the Hearst Tower, 520 Madison Avenue, and 375 Hudson Street here in New York City, with 20 more in queue. Altogether, worldwide, over 46 million square feet of Tishman Speyer space has been, or is in the process of being, certified under LEED or a similar rating system.
